21st Day of Lent I Corinthians 1:20-25

In this passage, the Apostle Paul emphasizes to the Corinthians that authentic wisdom and profound power is found only in the cross of Jesus Christ.

Many people cannot comprehend the cross of Jesus Christ.  Why is it a “stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles?”  The reason is that the cross and all it stands for runs contrary to our human understanding, where the crucified Christ represents impotence and absurdity.

Paul declares that “Jews demand signs” and “the Greeks desire wisdom.”  By “signs” Paul means the parting of the waves or the destruction of Jerusalem.  By “wisdom” Paul is saying the Greeks sought that which was intellectually pure, conceived by clever minds, and delivered by those with persuasive and cunning language---those able to debate and win the argument.

But, the message of the cross is simpler:  it is that there is a God, who wants to be in a personal relationship with us.  The message of the cross is that God invites us to put our trust and faith in Him, the crucified and risen Messiah.  This is where true power and wisdom can be found; this is the central message of the Christian faith.

Prayer:  Holy and gracious Lord, help us to understand the full meaning of the cross and God’s divine wisdom.
