At best it gets a chuckle; it merely creates a second hubbub to the one that covers the postlude. At worst it blows a huge theatrical hole in the service order that takes several minutes to recover. The purpose? Another time waster and filler?
Yes, passing the peace takes a bit of getting used to. Taken as theater, it does change the tenor of worship. It's purpose is not to waste time or fill, but to let people see and know the interpersonal connection of worship that Jesus recommends. I'd be happy to have us all think about alternatives.
